Looking to help your child with ADHD get back into the swing of things for the upcoming school year? Check out these five simple steps to kick-start their routines and set them up for success!
1. Start “back-to-school” mode at least a week before the first day of school.

It is important to give your child ample time to adjust to the school routine before the academic year starts. To ensure a smooth transition, communicate the plan with your family beforehand. You can say something like, “We will be resuming our school routine on Monday.” You may even mark it on the calendar as the start of the Back-to-School period.

2. Remind your child what goes into a school-year schedule.

It’s possible that your child has forgotten what their routine was like two months ago. It may be helpful to remind them that with back-to-school time approaching, they will need to adjust to earlier bedtimes and wake-up times.

3. Use organization tools to help your child stay on track.

Lists, charts and picture schedules can help kids with ADHD stick to routines. Start with the toughest time of day, like school mornings. Use a trial run week before school starts and allow enough time for each task. For example, set wake-up calls at 7:15 and 7:20, then breakfast at 7:40.

4. Get your child ready for afterschool schedules.

Set a specific time for your child to do homework during the school year. Encourage them to enjoy a quiet activity like reading or drawing during this time. Avoid screen time and this will aid children who struggle with time management.

5. If your child takes ADHD medication, adjust that routine, too.

For children with ADHD who took a summer medication break, talk to their healthcare provider about resuming medication and establishing a school routine. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or share concerns.
